Contemporary Artists as Stewardship Emissaries: Exploring the Aesthetic Interweaving of Cultural Norms and Local/Global Stewardship Midwest Institute for International & Intercultural Education 23rd Annual Conference, Schoolcraft College, MI.– April 2016
Abstract: A growing number of contemporary artists have turned their attention issues of stewardship. The interaction of human actions and cultural norms has become not only fertile ground but also essential issues for artists to engage with through aesthetic actions. Issues of stewardship of not only the environment, but also of cultures have become essential to continued human diversity and survival in this increasingly globalized world and artists are becoming not only harbingers but also leaders in a variety of environmental and socio-cultural movements. This module was designed for a 200 level contemporary art course to explore the contemporary artist as steward, but can be adapted for a variety of art and/or humanities courses. Many artists actually cross over and collaborate with professionals outside of the arts, so elements of the module can easily be adapted for STEM/STEAM disciplines.
